Depo Provera may up diabetes risk in some women
Contraception with depot medroxyprogesterone acetate is associated with an increase in the risk of diabetes in some Latino women with prior pregnancy-related or “gestational” diabetes, a study hints.
In the study, “DMPA and breast-feeding or DMPA and high triglycerides were associated with increased risk of diabetes in these women,” Dr. Anny Hui Xiang told Reuters Health. more…
The American Diabetes Association ‘Sounds the Alert’ for More Than Six Million Americans Who Have Diabetes But Don’t Know It
On Tuesday, March 28, 2006, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) will “Sound the Alert” about diabetes. Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States, 1.5 million people are diagnosed each year and, despite aggressive research efforts, there remains no cure in sight. Even with this high degree of visibility and vast scope, almost one-third of those affected by diabetes, or more than six million people, are not aware that they have the disease. more…
Pre-diabetes can be detected, cured
One year ago, Charles Greenlee’s doctor gave him a frightening diagnosis.
“She said I have pre-diabetes,” said Greenlee, 71, of the Hill District. “It worries you, it scares you.”
Pre-diabetes refers to people whose insulin levels are just below full-blown diabetes. It spurred Greenlee into action. He began working out a few times a week and eating less — not drastic steps, but enough to reverse the diagnosis.
“I’m normal now,” Greenlee said. “I never got diabetes and I don’t have pre-diabetes anymore.” more…
