Disasters Happen Overnight – Not the Help

Tuesday, 19 January 2010, 6:00

My heart has broken over the disaster in Haiti.  The stark reality of just how bad off that country is shines through the horror of the death and destruction from the earthquake that hit it last week.

BUT – as was with Katrina, so it is with Haiti.  With one difference, the United States has good infastructure to get help to people – Haiti doesn’t.

Remember how people in the US screamed, ranted and raved about the help not getting to Katrina victims five minutes after all was clear? The reality of getting help into an area devastated by a storm is it doesn’t happen overnight.

Now we look at Haiti with no roads, no infrastructure even close to what New Orleans has and we wonder why people are mad the help hasn’t arrived in a Burger King moment.

The biggest thing that pissed me off during Katrina was how it was all George Bush’s fault it

  1. happened, and
  2. the people weren’t plucked from their homes by an all loving government within seconds of the weather clearing up.

When people rely on the Government they need to remember the Post Office and wake up to the fact the government is not the answer. The totalitarian (think Democrats) government in charge of Haiti is the reason there are no roads or facilities in place in case of disasters. Then you also have the government individuals hurt or killed in the earthquake, with no plans in place that can run without them to help the people of the country.

This is the US if we don’t get rid of the totalitarian government in charge now – but that is not for this post either.

Aide is flowing in, but with the United Nations in charge, the structure to move the aide to people who need it isn’t there.  The United Nations is a corrupt organization who feeds off of the wealthy nations and the generosity of people who give in the time of disasters.   One of the glaring realities that I have heard through all the news reports is there is no one in charge.   There is no Haitian Government official to take charge, the UN personnel are probably looking for children to rape and the US can’t take charge or people will scream we are trying to take over the country.

So the people of Haiti pray for the help they need while the countries that are helping have their hands tied by situations beyond their control.

This recovery will not happen overnight.

Only disasters happen overnight.
