Fox & Fringe are My Friends

I.Hate.Commercials.

For the most part – ALL commercials.  Okay okay – those with cute puppies usually get me, but – commercials suck.  And not only do you have to put up with national commercials, then you have Billy-Joe-Jim-Bob from Duck’s Car Sales in a dirty knock-off polo shirt trying to sell you a used Hummer, with the volume at MAX!!

So why is Fox and Fringe my new friends?

Thirty to Ninety second commercials.

I’ll give you time to pick up your jaw, but you heard me correctly.  Of course those that have already experienced Fringe and the above, I have one question.  Have they spoiled us or what?

I started watching Fringe because the Sci-Fi element on television is dying a slow death and I need some of the odd-ball and Fringe mixes sci-fi, humor and crime in one neat ‘ittle package – AND shorter commercials.

Sunday night not only was Survivor pushed back because CBS has the brains of floor rug and won’t just cancel 60 Minutes when the football game runs over, but after you’ve waited for your favorite show to come on (ie: Survivor finale), then you have to put up with enough commercials to make you just put a 9mm in your mouth and pull the trigger.

At one point there were five commercials, then a three second flip back to Survivor to hear Jeff say, “We’ll be right back,” and then another five commercials.  I was beyond homicide and had moved into suicide by then.  I gave up before they got to announcing where Survivor was going next (already knew anyway) and  just went to bed.

With Fringe, when its time for  a commercial break, the screen goes dark and there is a leaf or a frog, or some element from the show and a voice says, “Fringe will return in XX seconds”.  Not minutes – SECONDS!  And trust me on this folks, you don’t have time to pick up the remote and hit mute cause of good old Billy-Joe-Jim-Bog, because he isn’t on there and by the time you do it anyway, the show is back on.  Plus, if you DVR it, its not worth trying to fast-forward through the commercials, because the time is so short, why bother?

Well, that’s just the idea behind shorter commercials – people don’t fast forward, leave the room, etc and attention has increased.   After dealing with the crap Sunday night with Survivor, CBS and the flood of commercials – I vote for Fringe and Fox.  Pay attention CBS, NBC, & CBS – this the future.

Hooray! Maybe more networks will pay attention. I noticed this shortened commercial time while watching Fringe too. I didn’t believe it at first, but soon discovered I barely had time for a bathroom break. I figured out they were being truthful about the seconds instead of minutes, realized what they were doing. I love it!

While I am not thrilling to Fringe, I do applaud Fox for this move. I know… me saluting a Fox programming decision… I think the end may be nigh.

Sean, I didn’t like X-Files the first year either … and we see where that went. With the SciFi channel turning into the wrestling network, gotta get something somewhere!
