Out of Central Indiana: “Mom charged with neglect in diabetic daughter’s death

An elementary school child’s death was preventable, police say.

MUNCIE — A Muncie mother is being held in jail without bond after being charged with neglecting her diabetic daughter, who died.

Amber Sky Bertram, 29, failed to manage her eight-year-old daughter’s type 1 diabetes, said city police Sgt. Linda Cook. She was booked into the Delaware County Jail on Friday on a charge of neglect of a dependent causing death, a class A felony.

Kaitlyn Mae Borson, a second-grader at Grissom Elementary School, died the day after Thanksgiving at Clarian North Hospital in Carmel, where she had been flown by helicopter two days earlier.

Unfortunately, I undertand hateful mothers because only hate would have driven this thing to ignore her daughter. Mother is a word for those that love their children … this women is not a mother.

Oh — there is more:

“Another tragic thing is child protective services had been involved with this family since February,” Cook said. “They had just closed the case at the end of October. A month later and she’s dead. The biggest thing is, the mom was with the child 24 hours a day, so I hold her responsible, but maybe other parts of the system failed her also.”

Yup, good ol’ CPS. [I'm not impressed with these people from readings of their actions and seeing their actions in person]   The “system failed her” is getting old.  First of all, why was this child left with the mother with a history of issues and hospitalization?  Okay okay … maybe CPS felt progress in care was there so they didn’t want to bust up the family, but I am a Type 2 and its hard to deal with day to day – I can’t imagine how a non-diabetic handles living with a Type 1.  [Type 1's have more care issues than most 2's].  Care givers have a special place in my heart too.   I have a close acquaintance who’s husband is a Type 2 and is depressed.   She goes through a lot dealing with him and his anger at his situation.

Okay – I’m going to stop trying to justify why this women did this to her daughter.  There is no excuse and with CPS in the mix, she had an avenue to go to with problems – even if the case was closed.

Throw away the key folks.
