What’s the best way to make health insurance affordable?

Competition.

Competition for customers makes service better and the product more reasonably priced.

I like my health insurance provider and I’m fortunate to be able to purchase it through my work place.

However - I cannot put hubby on it and he’s forced into the Tricare system because he’s retired military.  And anyone that has had, or has, Tricare knows it is one of the worst health insurance systems on the planet.

Hubby can’t go anywhere else because his current employer doesn’t offer health insurance coverage.

But - John McCain believes that health insurance should be “accessible” to everyone, even across state lines and even if you’re unemployed.  I’m not sure about the “across state lines issue” because each state has different governing rules for insurance.  I do like the idea of having access to other insurance carriers and taking it with you when you change jobs.   This would also keep me from having to justify them taking me on because of my ”preexisting” condition”.

I have a friend whose husband’s employer provides access to health insurance provided by another Tricare=equal carrier.  With John McCain’s idea, he could pick and chose from those able to insurance in his state.

John McCain Will Reform The Tax Code To Offer More Choices Beyond Employer-Based Health Insurance Coverage. While still having the option of employer-based coverage, every family will also have the option of receiving a direct refundable tax credit - effectively cash - of $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families to offset the cost of insurance. Families will be able to choose the insurance provider that suits them best and the money would be sent directly to the insurance provider. Those obtaining innovative insurance that costs less than the credit can deposit the remainder in expanded Health Savings Accounts.

John McCain Proposes Making Insurance More Portable. Americans need insurance that follows them from job to job. They want insurance that is still there if they retire early and does not change if they take a few years off to raise the kids.

At least he’s not talking about forcing me into a one-provider, government funded system like the liberals want.  I want to be able to take care of myself with my doctor’s help and not forced into having to use sub-standard providers for my care.

I confess, insurace policies and coverage explanations leave me going in circles most of the time. But, from what I’ve read, McCain seems to have a reasonable, common sense approach. Sure bets destroying our economy and health care system with government takeover, socialist style!

My biggest fear is being forced to a doctor that won’t listen to me, makes me change to medications “approved” by the government instead of keeping me on ones that work … its terrifying.

Dr. Tom Coburn proposed something similar to this and I thought it was a great idea. Competition is good. I’d rather have my money to purchase a health care plan that is best suited to my health care needs, than to be forced into only one provider by an employer. And for crying out loud, it really sucks if you get sick or hurt in another state and try to use your health insurance to pay for it. It would alleviate burdens to employers and force them to cough up wages and other benefits to keep us happy.
