Mercury: No in Tuna, Yes in Light Bulbs

by Jo | April 22nd, 2008

Do you have those ugly squiggly light bulbs in your house?  You know the ones that have no light to them at all and are too dim to do anything but sleep?

Yeah - those.

Did you know that congress is going to force us to switch to these bulbs?  Nanny State!

Did you also know that if one of these breaks - you are up shit creek without a paddle?

There is mercury in them there bulbs and it could be dangerous if not handled properly.

How do you normally clean up a light bulb when it breaks?  You pick up the big pieces, sweep up the rest and pray you have it all and move on.

With these CFL bulbs - DO NOT TOUCH!!!!  Mercury can seep into your skin and these bulbs run on Mercury.   Remove all pregnant women and children from the area, put on a China like mask and gloves and THEN start the clean up.  Remember to scrub with bleach or some other toxic cleaner too!  I suppose if it lands on a carpet you might have to cut out that section and remove it.

I mean - come on … they warn against mercury in Tuna, but its okay to have in my house?

Oh and when they burn out (I’ve had these bulbs and they burn out faster than the old fluorescent ones) you are suppose to recycle them.  Don’t put in the landfill because of (repeat after me) the mercury!

God help us from the stupidity.

Personally, I’m going to start stocking up on the flourescent bulbs.
