Rev. Jeremiah Wright made this comment in April 2003…
“For every one Oprah, a billionaire, you’ve got five million blacks who are out of work,” he said. “For every one Colin Powell, a millionaire, you’ve got 10 million blacks who cannot read. For every one Condoskeeza [sic] Rice, you’ve got one million in prison. For every one Tiger Woods, who needs to get beat, at the Masters, with his cap-blazing hips, playing on a course that discriminates against women. For every one Tiger Woods, we got 10,000 black kids who will never see a golf course.”
We know that he’s ticked at Oprah for leaving the church, but then again he claims she’s forgotten her roots. Does he even watch her show? Does he know what she has done for people of all races in this country - and S. Africa?
Colin Powell entered the United States Army and advanced to the rank of General before retiring and continuing his career in Washington. Affirmative Action may have gotten in, but he obtained his position on his own actions. The Army doesn’t promote willy-nilly because of skin color. Wikipedia
Dr. Rice is very accomplished in her own right. Graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in 1970, at age 19, she earned her BA in political science, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver. Five years later, she obtained her Master’s Degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame. In 1981, at the age of 26, she received her PhD. in Political Science from the Graduate School of International Studies at Denver. Wikipedia
As for 10,000 black kids never playing golf — just how many “want” to play golf is the real question. Tiger Woods’ father got him started on the game and through hard work and dedication arrived to where he is today. (Notice Dad in the picture?) Wikipedia Maybe the Rev is really pissed that Tiger married a white women.
Honestly - I think that Rev Wright and his ilk need to take a lesson in coveting and not being jealous of accomplishments of others. All of the people noted above give back to their community, but don’t scream it from mountain tops. There are many more people or color in this country who have accomplished much, but this post is about those Wright attacked.
Why can’t Rev Wright lift up these people as examples of what black people can, and have, accomplished?
Maybe because it doesn’t fit in with his hate.

Color aside, just as people, each have acheived some measure of success while, at the same time, the Rev. Wright has accomplished nothing at all except in spreading the venom of racist hate.

You’ve summed it up nicely, Jo. I think achieving goals thru hard work and sacrifice speaks to character. Wright is quite comfy preaching and living off parishoners and thru speaking gigs around the country.

People are willingly taking Wright comments out of context. He is a good man. An intelligent man (he was a valedictorian at Navy corpsman school) who was a volunteer MARINE. He’s a great man. Watch his interview with Moyers in full. Let’s not let the media scare us into voting for John McCain. Remember 80% of Americans think we are on the wrong track - McCain means staying on that wrong track.
