Browing through the net, I came upon Kiplinger.com’s area of ideas for gift giving this holiday season, that also give back to charities. Since this link came through one of my diabetes related feeds, I figured a look wouldn’t hurt.
There are some really nice gifts on there, but what struck me was the amount of the purchase price that actually went to a charty. How many times have we given to a charity without really knowing how much of what you give goes to really help? Sure we are smart enough to realize that there are fees to maintain funds, ship out products, hire staff, etc, but shouldn’t that be at the lower end of what you give?
Check out the slide show here and pay close attention to the charity, cost of item and how much goes to a charity.
The gifts purchased through the American Diabetes Association has a 100% donation.
Build A Bear has items up there for $18 with $1 of the profits going to charity.

That Kiplinger slideshow link is a good resource. It would be beneficial for anyone who plans to donate to charity this year to have a look. Many so-called charitable programs are so in name alone… paying out mere pennies to charities just to increase their sales.
Great post, Jo!

It is an eye opener about what actually goes to a charity. So many have way too high ‘administrative’ costs. A donor really has to do the homework before giving.
