I was enjoying my favorite burger and fries the other day at lunch and one of my co-workers said, “You’ll never cure yourself of diabetes if you keep eating that way.” My response, “I’m a diabetic for life.” She didn’t understand that for some of us, the diagnoses of diabeties is a life changing and long event.
I think she was talking about this study:
Obesity surgery helps patients do more than shed weight — it often cures their diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, researchers say.
The research — an analysis of 136 studies — found that such operations are more than cosmetic. They appear to alter the patient’s body chemistry itself and eliminate or relieve conditions that can lead to heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure.
Yes losing weight can reverse diabetes, Type II, in some people, but for the most part, we are diabetics for life.
However, gestational diabetes is different. This form of diabetes goes away after child birth, but studies show that the mother, and child, are then more prone to becoming diabetics thereafter.
Does having gestational diabetes put me at higher risk for diabetes in the future?
Yes. About two-thirds of women who have the condition will go on to have it in future pregnancies. And a few studies have found that about 50 percent of women who get gestational diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within the first five years after delivery.

The point with Gestational Diabetes is the same with anyone with diabetes - you need to take care of yourself for the baby, and in the future.
But then don’t we all need to do better?
