Diabetes in the News

Blood sugar control is important in diabetes, specialists say. It can help prevent dreaded complications like blindness, amputations and kidney failure. But controlling blood sugar is not enough.
Nearly 73,000 Americans die from diabetes annually, more than from any disease except heart disease, cancer, stroke and pulmonary disease.

Until 10 years ago, children who were diagnosed with diabetes nearly always had type 1 disease, once called juvenile-onset. What a difference a decade makes. Although a recent study indicates pediatric type 2 diabetes is still relatively infrequent, experts are concerned about the trend and the impact the condition, particularly its complications, might have on affected children and families.
“It does exist and it’s increasing,” said endocrinologist Dr. Silva Arslanian, director of the Weight Management and Wellness Center at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. “It’s increasing because more and more children are becoming obese.”

Researchers have found new evidence that soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contribute to the development of diabetes, particularly in children. In a laboratory study of commonly consumed carbonated beverages, the scientists found that drinks containing the syrup had high levels of reactive compounds that have been shown by others to have the potential to trigger cell and tissue damage that could cause the disease, which is at epidemic levels. They reported here at the 234th national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Jo Says: Stop eating foods with this crap in it. You’d be surprised how many foods out there, processed of course, have this crap in them. I found out by accident early on about how dangerous this stuff was to diabetics when I used a bit of powdered creamer at work, supposedly “low sugar”. Low Sugar my ass — it spiked my glucose to over 200!! People if you don’t do anything else for your health, do this: Stop Eating this Crap!
- Insulin Pen May Replace Syringe For Diabetics – I’d do this if you didn’t waste so much insulin in the process. You have to dispose of the pen after 28 days and you could still have 80 units of insulin left to use. You cannot put the pens in the refrigerator to keep the insulin cool. I’ll stick to they way I do it for now.
- Glucose regulating insulin gel caps – If they have finally figured out how to do this — I can’t image how much some people’s lives will change.
