But I Threw It Away?!

Thursday, 16 August 2007, 6:27

For weeks we’ve been getting ”unknown number” calls on the caller ID twice a day. When we are home we ignore them and no message was left.  Finally the SGM(R) answered it yesterday and found out it was a call from Accu-Chek wanting to know how my meter was working for me.

What meter?  Oh — wait, yeah, now its coming to me – the one that was 100 points off the meter at my doctor’s office and the cheap ass one I bought at Wal-Mart and I threw in the trash a couple years ago.   That one.  Dan told me to just talk to them and they’d stop calling.  I figured okay, it would stop the “unknown number” calls at least.

He told them to call me at 6 pm and the first thing that went wrong was at 9:15 pm when they called.  They already screwed up coming out of the gate – you don’t call people’s homes that late unless its an emergency.

This gal asked to speak to me by name and I said, “Yeah.”

“Are you Mrs. XX?”

“Yeah”

“I am so-and-so from Accu-Check calling to get some information on your meter.”

“Okay – but I threw it away over 2 years ago”

“Oh really?  What was the problem?”

I relayed the issue with it being 100 points off from my doctor’s meter and the cheap Wal-Mart Brand.

“You know we have Accu-Check technicians available 24 hours a day.  Would you like me to transfer you to one now?”

“Ah, no. I don’t have the meter any longer”

“Okay I just wanted you to know we are available to you 24 hours a day with any problems you might have.”

“I don’t have the meter anymore and won’t be buying any more Accu-Chek meters in the future”

“Okay.  Well, if you have any more problems the number for customer service is on the back of your meter.”

“You mean on the back of the one I threw away?”

“Yes ma’am.”

I just hung up the phone at that point.  Didn’t even say good-bye.  This is the gist of the conversation, but she kept asking if I wanted to talk to a technician, I kept repeating no – and then the icing on the cake was the last bit.

It was a straight script read.  She stumbled when I told her I’d thrown it away, but then went right back on script and never got off it.

I used to do a job like that and no I’m not brainless, but this girl probably couldn’t chew bubble-gum and think at the same time.  I relayed this to the SGM(R) and he said the guy he’d talked to earlier in the day didn’t sound like he was clicking on all cylinders either.

People have to have jobs…

…and least she spoke English!
