Wrestling

We did something the other night we hadn’t in a long, long time – watched professional wrestling. Before I go on, yes we know its fake. I’ve known it was fake since seeing my first live event in Macon, GA when Dust Rhodes and the Fabulous Freebirds were at the top of their game.

Boy have things changed in the couple years since we watched. For those that have followed the “sport” do you remember the days when the women of wrestling escorted the men only?  Sure they got their licks in but their main job was to wear fancy clothes, trowels of make-up and follow the men around. Chyna helped push forward the current crop of females wrestlers, but they seem to be wearing a bit less of everything.

Of course the main reason we watched the other night was because of the recent tragic events[1, 2, 3] I wanted to see how they were handling it since the knowledge of the murder / suicide and supposed drug abuse.  You can think bad of me all you want – but I’m sure we aren’t the only ones that peeked inside that world again since the news.

Its not the same since the WWE absorbed the WCW. The Monday night ratings wars are gone and the storylines have to be rawer and filled with more T&A than women just being escorts. Its still entertaining and mind numbing enough to put me to sleep before 11 pm. So we were thrilled and confused (too many wrestlers we didn’t know) but a good time was had anyway. Maybe we won’t wait so long to watch again.
