Obese Young Adults Face High Diabetes Risk
People who are obese at age 18 will more likely than not develop type 2 diabetes at some point, according to a U.S. study.

“This shows that it’s very important to prevent weight gain at early ages,” said lead study author Dr. K.M. Venkat Narayan of Emory University in Atlanta. For young adults who are already obese, the findings underscore the importance of lifestyle changes, he told Reuters Health.  Source

Blood Sugar Stays Steady During Acute Mental Stress
Most patients with type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, maintain good control over their blood sugar, without having to adjusting their insulin dose when they are exposed to short-term mental stress – in this case — a rollercoaster ride — Swiss investigators report.

Diabetes patients are often confronted with questions about the affects of psychological stress on blood sugar — chronic psychosocial stress has been associated with increased blood sugar and poor adherence to treatment, Dr. Peter Wiesli, of University Hospital of Zurich, and colleagues write in the journal Diabetes Care.

To investigate the effects of short-term mental stress, the researchers asked 20 type 1 diabetic patients to monitor their sugar levels while they were riding on two different rollercoasters within 15 minutes. Source

First Type 1 Patient Injected with Pig Islet Cells
According to a press release from LCT (Living Cell Technologies) the first type 1 diabetes patient was injected successfully with porcine pancreatic islet cells. The product is called Diabecell and is being tested at the Sklifasovsky Institute in Moscow in the world’s first human clinical trials. Source
