English Only Please

Sunday, 1 April 2007, 9:26

I have no problem with people that speak another language.  Many schools offer a second language course, even mine did growing up.

BUT — I am sick and tired of my tax money, state and federal, going for printing legal documents for those that don’t speak English.

Newt is taking some heat for comments he made, equaling Spanish speaking to “ghetto” language.  Please — I hear kids speaking “getto” all the time in the mall and its English.  To me “ghetto” is the language of gangs; the shortcuts of speach used to talk about what they are doing, legal or not, so others can’t understand.

He may have said what he did in a way that “offended” others; but they are offended because they miss the point.  They are looking to be offended and use any excuse to be that way.  Instead of understanding what he’s trying to say, they turn up their noses and demand an apology.  If they would stop and engage their brains for two seconds, they’d realize he’s talking about not using “their” tax money to acquiesce to those who want the benefits of living in America, without working to fit in.

Here is what he said, from FoxNews.com:

“The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up” to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

“The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. … We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto,” Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.

“Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that’s true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English,” he said.

Stop using my tax money to pander to these people. If they want to utilize the government services of whatever state they live in, or the US Government, then head over to local English as a Second Language course and learn.

It was late but I was not quite ready to retire for the day. As I was nearing that end, I was reviewing some paperwork and the TV happened to have on a rerun of Miami Vice.
The Detective who is not part of the forensic unit got in a bit of a shouting match with a CSI over a man not speaking English after being here for 30 years. The Detective was mad about it and related items and the CSI was mad that the Detective was mad about it saying it did not matter. It does.
It also matters that many groups whose membership is based on race or ethnicity refer to themselves as the racial or ethnic distinction with ‘Americans’ added to the reference. That seems to me to be placing the racial or ethnic distinction ahead of being American.
Some people use the ‘melting pot’ term to defend their right to be here but it does not find a place in their lives beyond that. Then the fear of losing their cultural heritage is used as a reason to continue the trend.

Are we not supposed to be Americans first and speak the language of America? What language is spoken in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Poland, etc., etc?

If, rather than sustaining your cultural heritage, you choose it over American heritage, it loudly proclaims your preference for something other than America.
