J&J issues warning on counterfeit test strips

The Food and Drug Administration yesterday warned counterfeit versions of Johnson & Johnson blood glucose test strips for people with diabetes have been found in several markets around the United States.
The fake strips were discovered by investigators for Lifescan, a J&J subsidiary that makes OneTouch blood glucose monitors. No injuries have been attributed to the counterfeits, but Lifescan said the strips do not meet the company’s “performance specifications.”
“Use of these counterfeit test strips could result in inaccurate test results that may lead to inaccurate treatment,” the company said in a statement.
The strips were distributed by Medical Plastic Devices of Quebec and Champion Sales in Brooklyn, the FDA said. The bogus strips can be identified by their lot numbers: for OneTouch Basic/Profile, lots 272894A, 2619932 or 2606340; for OneTouch Ultra, lot 2691191.

Uh, that’s a bit of an ‘oops’. I hope that other companies are checking their test strips to ensure that they are correct.

I just recently switched to a one touch ultramini and have noticed that my sugars are higher than usual. I also have checked my sugars on another machine and a few times the two machines had a 40 point difference. Do you know anything about the one touch ultramini? Is it a reliable machine? Until I switched my sugars were recorded between 80 and 110, now they are in the 120′s range or higher. Thank you for you time.
