The boycott in 1980 caused so many athletes to lose their only chance to compete. Some of them had trained for years just for that opportunity. It's hard to punish them for wanting to represent the US with pride just because the Olympic Committee chose to let China host this time. I guess it's one of those "wait and see" decisions...
