Maker of herbal supplements Dia-Cope and Sagee forfeits gains
August 14, 2006 – An outfit that had already been busted for selling a fake herbal supplement they claimed would treat Alzheimer’s disease has now been banned by the Federal Trade Commission from claiming their new pills will cure diabetes and made to forfeit their earnings. Both claims are obvious bait for senior citizens, who are the most frequent victims of the two diseases.
This operation selling Chinese herbal supplements is banned from claiming its products treat or cure diseases, to settle Federal Trade Commission charges it violated a previous court order.
The FTC alleged the sellers of Dia-Cope, a pill claimed to prevent, treat, and cure diabetes, violated the order by misrepresenting the health benefits of their product and misrepresenting that clinical trials proved their claims. The defendants will give up their ill-gotten gains – all of the assets they received from the sale of Dia-Cope. Source
Blacks, Hispanics Hospitalized More Often for Diabetes, Heart Disease
TUESDAY, Aug. 15 (HealthDay News) — Black and Hispanics are hospitalized more often in the United States than non-Hispanic whites for diabetes and other health problems, researchers report.
That’s a costly trend, since many of these conditions can be prevented or controlled through good quality outpatient care, concludes a report recently released by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The findings are based on 2003 statistics. Source
Chromium May Help Control Diabetes
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The popular supplement chromium picolinate may help people with type 2 diabetes better control their blood sugar, and possibly avoid the weight gain that comes with certain diabetes drugs, a small study suggests.
Chromium supplements are already marketed as a way to improve the body’s use of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. But their use in managing diabetes is controversial, said Dr. William Cefalu, a co-author of the new study and a researcher at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The researchers randomly assigned 29 diabetic adults to take either the medication plus 1,000 micrograms of chromium picolinate per day or the drug plus a placebo (sugar pill) for 6 months. Nutrition 21, maker of the Chromax brand, supplied the supplements.
In the end, study participants who took the supplement showed greater improvements in insulin sensitivity and long-term blood sugar control. They also gained less weight and body fat than those on the medication alone. Source
Eating out when you have diabetes
With planning, you can follow your meal plan for diabetes when you eat at restaurants. Here are some tips:
- Look for restaurants that have heart-healthy items marked on their menus, and choose these items whenever possible.
- Request pamphlets from your favorite fast-food restaurants—most fast-food restaurants have printed material that provides the carbohydrate, calorie, and fat information for many of their menu items. If this information is not available, go to your local bookstore and purchase a pocket guide that includes it.
- Review the diabetes food guide pyramid so that you will know where the various foods fit in and, most importantly, which foods contain carbohydrate.
- Review your meal plan, if necessary, so you will know how many carbohydrate choices you should have at that meal.
