This morning, someone in my organization mistyped an email address.  Her mistake resulted in an email going out to my entire division that should have gone to one small group.  The information in the email wasn’t confidential, but it was obvious from reading the email that it didn’t need to be shared.  I deleted the email as soon as I realized it.

Moments later, the responses started.

“Please remove my name from this list.”

“Me too, thx”

“I don’t understand why I got this, please take my name off”

Okay, I can understand why someone might feel the need to question an email they have received.  I might not think much of you for questioning an email that obviously wasn’t meant for you, but to each his own.  But why do you feel the need to RECOPY THE ENTIRE DIVISION??

TWENTY responses so far, and more coming in even as I type this.  We’re now taking bets on when the emails will change to “please stop replying to the entire group”.

These are probably the same people who cry every day over the fact that they’re bogged down in company restrictions on email usage.

Learn how to use the buttons, people.  REPLY goes back to the sender.  REPLY-TO-ALL goes to everyone.  If in doubt, maybe you shouldn’t send it!

It’s sad when thoughts go to requiring a class on email (with exam) before you are allowed to use it…

  1. Even sadder is the probability that there are some… many even, who really do need classes for something as simple as email…

… someone once said that a typewriter was a dangerous weapon in the hands of a fool. If computers were capable of hurting someone, you can bet that more than a few of these types would end up on disability.

    Live and laugh… it’s Monday

  2. We have this happen at least every other week. I do what you do, DELETE. And then spend the rest of the time deleting the replies to the oops! I give people such a hard time about it around the office — especially when they complain about their mail boxes being so full!
