Consumers Turning to Natural Supplements to Prevent Type II Diabetes
As more Americans are diagnosed with Type II diabetes and pre-diabetes, consumers are turning to dietary supplements that specifically target blood sugar control and may help prevent developing diabetes. The industry is responding to the demand for effective, well-researched natural solutions with successful new formulations. Products featuring once obscure folk herbs like cinnamon or ingredients such as bitter melon are receiving increasing media attention and a boost in sales. These products are being introduced through both the natural and conventional retail channels.

New player in type 2 diabetes?
WASHINGTON, May 30 (UPI) — SHP-1, one of the proteins that regulate the immune system, may also provide a key to new treatments for type 2 diabetes. That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the May issue of Nature Medicine that suggests that the protein plays a role in controlling blood glucose. The study — done by Canadian researchers — found that mice bred to produce little or no SHP-1 were also extremely sensitive to insulin and also appeared to metabolize glucose in the liver and the muscles very effectively. The research team hypothesized that mice and humans who have insulin resistance may overproduce SHP-1 and concluded that finding ways to lower SHP-1 production may be useful in treating type 2 diabetes. However, the trick will be to reduce SHP-1 levels without interfering with the protein’s essential role in immune-system maintenance, the researchers said. The study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Metformin Medicinal Chewing Gum Against Type-2 Diabetes and Obesity
It seems that chewing gum is a good method of drug delivery. Generex Biotechnology collaborates with medicinal chewing gum developer Fertin Pharma A/S to develop a chewing gum containing metformin, a generic drug used for the treatment of Type-2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. The collaboration will seek to combine Generex’s proprietary buccal drug delivery platform technologies with Fertin’s know-how related to gum base formulations, solubilization systems, and taste masking / modification to create a metformin medicinal chewing gum that will deliver metformin into the body via the buccal mucosa (the inner lining of the mouth) rather than in its current tablet form. The developers hope that this method of delivery will circumvent adverse side effects associated with taking metformin in tablet form such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and increased gas production.
