Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Linked to Diabetes and Heart Disease
CHICAGO, April 18 - As women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) age, they may develop increased risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, researchers here suggested. The mothers of daughters with PCOS, many of whom likely had the syndrome themselves, showed evidence of higher-than-normal cholesterol levels, rates of insulin resistance, and prevalence of metabolic syndrome, said Andrea E. Dunaif, M.D., of Northwestern University here. The study also adds to the evidence that PCOS — characterized by irregular menses and elevated levels of male hormones — is heritable, Dr. Dunaif and colleagues reported online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

UVa lab creates possible diabetes treatment
The mice in Dr. Jerry Nadler’s laboratory look thin and skittish inside their clear cages. They have the mouse equivalent of type 1 diabetes. But they won’t suffer much longer. After almost two years of work, Nadler and his fellow researchers have successfully reversed the course of the disease in mice. Nadler, who is chief of the University of Virginia Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, has combined two drugs, which have already been tested on humans separately. One, lisofylline, is an experimental drug that stops the body from killing its own insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The other drug, exendin-4, promotes the growth of new pancreatic cells.

Activists urge EU action on diabetes “pandemic”
The European Union must act against a “pandemic” of diabetes, a disease affecting 25 million citizens but underfunded despite killing about as many people as AIDS worldwide, a European Parliament member said on Wednesday.  Worsening obesity in Europe and an aging and increasingly sedentary population have led to big increases in incidences of diabetes and EU numbers are forecast to increase 16 percent by 2025, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) says.

Obesity Driving Diabetes Epidemic
THURSDAY, April 20 (HealthDay News) — America’s obesity epidemic is definitely driving the nation’s type 2 diabetes epidemic, says a new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The incidence of diagnosed diabetes rose 41 percent from 1997 to 2003 among the study participants, Geiss found. About 20 million Americans have diabetes, although many do not yet know it, according to the American Diabetes Association.
