U.S. targets obesity, diabetes in veterans
The Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services Departments are launching a campaign Monday against obesity and diabetes by promoting nutrition, exercise and education.

The VA says that of the 7.5 million veterans receiving its health benefits, more than 70 percent are obese and 1 out of 5 have diabetes.

As part of the new program, VA doctors will give out “prescriptions for health” to patients after computing their body mass index, a measure of body fat. The prescriptions will list exercises and nutritional information that match patients’ health needs. more…

Potatoes increase diabetes risk, study finds
Women who eat a diet high in potatoes are at increased risk of diabetes, according to US researchers.

Harvard University researchers studied nearly 85,000 American women and found that those with the highest potato intake were about 14 per cent more likely than those with the lowest intake to develop type 2 diabetes.

The researchers also found that women who consumed the most french fries had a 21 per cent higher risk of diabetes compared with those who ate the fewest. more…

Bristol-Myers drug raises diabetes risk: study
BOSTON (Reuters) - The Bristol Myers Squibb Co. antibiotic Tequin can have “life threatening” side effects including serious diabetes, according to a Canadian study on Wednesday which urged doctors to stop prescribing it.

Elderly people who took Tequin were 17 times more likely to develop serious diabetes than if they took another antibiotic, and were four times more likely to be hospitalized for low blood sugar, the study found. more…

Diabetes Drug Byetta Gaining Attention as Weight Loss Aid
A new prescription diabetes drug that has only been on the market for nine months, Byetta (exenatide), is attracting a rapidly growing following because of its effectiveness in helping those taking it lose weight.

First in a class of medicines that “mimic” the effects of naturally occurring hormones from the intestines, Byetta (pronounced bye-A-tuh) was approved by the FDA last April to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. more …
