Indigenous plant research targeting diabetes
St Matthew’s University is currently conducting research on plants found only in the Cayman Islands, which may improve treatments or even find the cure to diabetes. The medical school is also collaborating with the Health Services Authority (HSA) on a new medical research programme to find better ways to treat chronic problems such as hypertension, heart attacks and strokes. Discussions with older Caymanians on the healing aspects of papaya leaves, sea grape and other local plants found in the Cayman Islands was the driver behind the research project that started in December 2005. more…
1,500 Jamaicans diagnosed with diabetes annually
ONE out of every five Jamaican adults suffers from diabetes, says Professor Errol Morrison, president of the Diabetes Association of Jamaica. This means that there are approximately 300,000 people living with the disease. Pig cell research offers hope for diabetes cure
Researchers at the University of Minnesota have reversed the course of diabetes in monkeys by transplanting islet cells from pigs — giving renewed hope that a better treatment, or even a cure, may soon be available. The transplant research, published Sunday, addresses a key problem in diabetes: the lack of so-called islet cells in the pancreas that create insulin. Human islet cells work for transplants, but there are not enough to treat the millions of people with diabetes. more…
