Obese kids have doubled diabetes risk
Obese children are more than twice as likely to have diabetes than children of normal weight, says a new study. The study — from the University of Michigan Health System — showed that more than 229,000 children — approximately 3.2 cases for every 1,000 American children under the age of 18 — currently have diabetes. The researchers noted that about one-third of those children are obese. more…

Now don’t get me wrong. It’s not the ADA’s fault. I’ve been researching LADA or Type 1.5 or whatever you might like to call the onset of insulin-dependent diabetes in adults, and have discovered that no one has a very good idea how many people in this country have this disease at all. It seems even the diabetes drug and supply companies are guestimating. Kinda mind-blowing. more…

Brain Plays Key Role In Diabetes Therapy
The brain plays a major role in the ability of insulin therapy to lower blood sugar in animals with diabetes, according to a new study in the January 11, 2006, Cell Metabolism.
“Our findings suggest that, in individuals with diabetes, the ability of insulin to lower blood sugar involves the brain,” said senior author of the study, Michael Schwartz of the University of Washington at Seattle. “This effect is not trivial; the brain makes a substantial contribution to insulin response.” more…
‘Adult’ diabetes striking kids
Mother’s instinct told Connie Chapman something wasn’t quite right with her son last summer. She noticed the first-grader couldn’t keep pace with the neighborhood children as they rode bikes. “He’d ride fast in the beginning, but the other boys could go so much longer.†Later on she noticed his frequent trips to the bathroom. “I figured he had a bladder infection,†Chapman recalled. Jack Bixby, now 7, saw the family doctor for a urine test. Although the doctor said no infection was present, he told Chapman that Jack’s sugar in the urine was high. “I knew instantly what was wrong,†she said. His blood glucose, or sugar, level was 542. Normal is around 100. more…
