Hurry Up and Wait

Saturday, 21 January 2006, 13:11

Anyone that has spent any time in the military will completely understand the title of this post.

This is what the SGM and I did this week.

Monday was suppose to be fly day to Afghanistan.

At 6 am, I dropped him off on post and headed back to the house in the dark.

I pulled into the garage about 6:30 am and my cellphone started ringing. It was a post number, so I figured he forgot to tell me something – so of course I answered it.

“We’re not flying today.”

“What?”

“The head dude in Kuwait passed away last night and everything is shut down for 3 days. Nothings moving, not even the planes.”

So about 10:30 am, one of the guys going with him brought him home, and for the next 5 days we enjoyed joking about the “waiting”. He repacked his carry on bag about 3 times, we went out to supper and enjoyed ourselves.

This morning I dropped him off again on post and his plane is scheduled to take off about 5 our time.

Ah, such is the Army life.
