Man Struck by Car Given Jaywalking Ticket
WASHINGTON (AP) – A former secretary of the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts received a $5 jaywalking ticket after he was hit by a car and critically injured while crossing a busy street.
Charles Atherton, 73, was conscious when he was issued the ticket before being taken to George Washington University Hospital, District of Columbia police told The Washington Post.
However, witnesses reported that Atherton was unresponsive and struggling to breathe as he lay crumpled in the road Thursday night. They said he was knocked out of his shoes and his head hit the vehicle’s windshield, leaving him bleeding from his head and nose.
Police said Atherton received the ticket because he caused the accident by crossing Connecticut Avenue in mid-block.
Oh for heavens sake … isn’t being hurt enough payment ???

The ticket/$5 fine? It’s not about “payment”. Probably the smallest the cops could levy. Actually, in this litigious society, I think the jaywalking ticket would serve best to absolve the driver of fault in a case like this—someone wandering out into the middle of the street w/o paying any attention to either traffic or a crosswalk. Such empty-headed loons are a wee tad difficult to avoid.
It’s that dirty “R” word: responsibility.

I seen on the news sometime ago there was a sting operation in effect to get people that did not stop for crossers of a cross walk. It went like this… They had a cop in a bright yellow chicken costume so you couldn’t miss him… Then he attempted to cross the street AT A CROSSWALK… Well anyone that did not stop at the crosswalk for him to cross got pulled over by a cop on a bike and cited.
Somewhat low and devious, but I bet those drivers will remember pedestrians.
