Renquist dies

All over the blogs, of course, but here’s Michelle’s roundup of comments.

I agree with some of what is being said. To say “the timing couldn’t be worse” is a little cold given that a great man has passed on. Then again, he had a chance to resign over the summer (which would have been far better timing, even if O’Connor had left at the same time) and did not take it.

I do not believe that the situation in New Orleans is going to decide the ’08 election…yet. I read yesterday that the response to Katrina was 5 days (and truly, it was less than that), but for Andrew (1992, Clinton) it was 9 days. I haven’t verified that yet, but if true it means that the feds did a far better job this time. What will decide the election is not how many days it took to get there, but rather what New Orleans and the coast of Mississippi look like a year from now.

This may well speed up Roberts’ nomination, although I have to wonder if it wouldn’t have happened quickly anyway. Plus, hurricane coverage, relief efforts etc will probably dilute coverage of the confirmation process (which will only upset the libs if they have something on him…and I haven’t heard that they do).

It’s going to be a very, very busy couple of weeks — hurricane relief, Roberts’ confirmation, speculation on Bush’s next choice, gas prices….little stories still out there but pushed to the side recently (Air America, Able Danger), and who knows what else! Wow.
