Diabetes

I have been fighting, fighting, fighting my sugar levels since my surgery. I was down within normal ranges (90-110) the majority of the time prior to, but now have only been able to get them down there about twice. Part of it is because I had to lay off the exercise for about 2 weeks, and Type II’s have to use exercise as a major part of their treatment of this condition.

So here I feel like I’m back at the beginning of the journey again. Plus — I’m sick and damn tired of eating salads. Every fracking day a salad. I’m tired of not being able to enjoy foods. No, I don’t want to eat gallons of ice cream or Snickers bars, but it would be nice to be able to enjoy a bite or two of them without having to worry about my levels flying up into the 200s.

I really wonder if it shouldn’t be time to add some low level insulin to my treatment, like Lantus. My doctor and I discussed this during my last appointment and decided against it at that time. But now I’m further along in my treatment and even though I know I can get the levels back down to normal via exercise and eating nothing but salads, I want more options.

Each month at work we have birthday lunches and this month they have chosen to have it catered by a restaurant I’ve never heard of and have no idea what the food is going to be like. I want to be able to enjoy what everyone else is eating during these times, instead of having to go to Wendy’s and get a salad.

Lantus is not a “take it whenever you eat” type insulin, but you take a dosage once a day, via injection, and it puts a low dose of insulin into your system to assist throughout the day with small spikes and such. Can I take giving myself shots? Yes — if it means I can get a bite of something I want to eat every now and then and it helps keep my levels within the normal ranges.

Having Diabetes sucks big time, on top of the fact I don’t have a thyroid either and have to deal with that too. But — then I guess it could be worse, and I have to remember that. I still can see, walk, talk, hear, and live a full day. Okay God, I’m not complaining about what you gave me to deal with, I’m being thankful for what I have.

  1. Oh, I feel your pain! I have just been diagnosed as borderline (whatever the heck that means!), so my doctor has put me on a strict diet to get the sugar levels down. On the upside, I’ve lost 15 pounds. Silver lining, I suppose.

  2. Jo… I truly understand your thyroid battle. I have severe Graves with Thyroid Eye Disease and pre-tibia myxedema which are rare complications to Graves. Four surgeries to date. However, I cannot speak to your diabetes except that I am so sorry that you are having to deal with both. You deal with these diseases, work and soley run this blog. You are an amazing woman. My hat is off to you. You are a true Babe.

  3. I had diabetes while pregnant all four times. I will get diabetes sometime. Right now i am just trying to stay healthy and keep it away as long as possible. I fear the year i fail the test.

Sorry you are having so much trouble

  4. Great site Jo.

    h.t. to Dr. Phat Tony.

Be careful what you wish for with the insulin. As a type II, when I started using it, the weight gain was hard to control.

  5. Insolublog — I worry about weight gain, but I also worry about long term damage being done if I don’t get these under control again. I went over 300 this weekend — first time in months … it was down this morning to 217, so going to eat light carbfree today and see if that helps. But with lantus, would I be having this problem?

  6. I have been using the slow Humulin N for about ten years. I don’t know about Lantus. If you don’t burn the excess sugar with exercise, the insulin will convert it to fat.
