David Gelernter writes a commentary for the LA Times today titled, “We Are Our History – Don’t Forget It” Now I will tell you first off that I stunk at history in school – then again, we had history teachers that never taught anything but dates and the names of events. I now know why. I grew up in Southern Minnesota – a very liberal State. I was getting the liberal indoctrination early on. My knowledge of history was self taught by happening to read something and wanting to learn more, but the most I’ve learned was during the last 13 years the CSM and I have been married.

But – I do know what a Soviet Gulag and Nazi Concentration Camp is. I confess having to look up the Pol Pot reference the Jester Durbin made – but I’m not embarrassed about that! Unfortunately, I still knew more about the history of Nazi Germany than Durbin did/does, whatever – he doesn’t know shit!

Mr. Gelernter mentions this in his column:

Ignorance of history destroys our judgment. Consider Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill), who just compared the Guantanamo Bay detention center to Stalin’s gulag and to the death camps of Hitler and Pol Pot — an astonishing, obscene piece of ignorance. Between 15 million and 30 million people died from 1918 through 1956 in the prisons and labor camps of the Soviet gulag.

I tried to hunt up the number of deaths for accuracy in my original rant about Durbin the Jester, but couldn’t find it in time to post it and get to work. However, I know it was millions – as I know there have been zero deaths at Camp Delta.

There is no excuse for a representative of a State in this country not to know the history of the world around them.

There is no excuse for the stupidity of blaspheming a whole organization for the actions of a few.

There is no excuse for labeling a camp that houses less than 1/4 of those killed in the German ovens as a concentration camp.

How embarrassed would you imagine this man’s family is?

How embarrassed do you think his parents are, should they still be around?

If I had stood in front of God and Country and spouted off the out and out lies that man did, and my mother (although a staunch democrat) saw it, she would have called me up and chewed me from stem to stern about my lack of knowledge of history. Lest we forget, she would say, you’re half German yourself!

Mr. Gelernter adds about the lack of historical education our children are getting today:

To forget your own history is (literally) to forget your identity. By teaching ideology instead of facts, our schools are erasing the nation’s collective memory. As a result, some “expert” can go on TV and announce (20 minutes into the fighting) that Afghanistan, Iraq or wherever “is the new Vietnam” — and young people can’t tell he is talking drivel.

Bravo Mr. Gelernter — Bravo!!

I don’t have children – but if I did, history would be a strong study, and not just dates and events.

Mr. Durbin’s grade sheet reads : F in History and an overall S for Stupidity in general.
