When we bought this house almost 5 years ago now, we bought it mainly because it had been custom built for someone the size of the 1SG. Yup, everything in the house, ie: cabinets, shower head, doors, was built for someone that is over 6′ tall.

But the yard — the yard was in horrible shape. We found out from the neighbors that the previous owners only mowed the lawn once a month, if that, and was even told by the realtor they had to keep it mowed at least once a week once it went on the market. So, you can tell from that there was no TLC on this lawn.

Each year we pamper, primp, and do what we can to keep the grass alive and it has paid off. BUT — one side of the driveway never has grown any grass. So Sunday we went to Home Depot and bought some mound junipers to put on it.

The 1SG was smart on this trip. Instead of getting a post hole digger, we rented a one man auger to help dig the holes we needed. This turned out to be the best spent money since the hill is very rocky and steep.

Here the 1SG is getting ready to bunch out hole #2 for the junipers. See how nasty sandy that hill is? Let’s not even go into how much it royally sucks to mow the weeds that grew there.

Almost done. We initially bought 6 plants and decided that 8 would have been better. The 1SG bought 2 more when he went back to return the auger.

Here is the finished product! We didn’t put the pine straw all the way down, because we flat didn’t buy enough. But still, the 1SG won’t have to risk his life mowing the weeds on this slope anymore, and eventually the junipers will spread out and take over the whole thing.

Just as we were finishing up, the neighbors came home and found their cat had escaped from the house. We spent the next 3 hours trying to get the cat out of the culvert that runs under the road on the left side of where we were working on the slope.

All and all it was a great day to work outside, but we completely missed the Coca Cola 600 — as we both fell asleep on the couch right after supper!
