Regarding the Phenix City story reference:
As it happens, Georgia owns the Chattahoochee River and everything in and over it to the high water mark on the west bank… which is where Alabama and Phenix City begin. Georgia and the City of Columbus therein, like to pretend that the responsibility for maintaining the river belongs to both cities, both states. This will conveniently change though if it comes down to a matter of who benefits from the river and then it belongs to Georgia.
The dams in question are attached to old mills on the Columbus, Georgia banks. But because this safety issue has now been raised into the public’s view, it becomes a Phenix City problem too.
On a side note, it is rare when the ‘Little Muddy’ has enough water to even keep the catfish wet, much less offer any real peril to those fishing from it. But there are stupid people everywhere and if there is a teaspoon of water waiting, they will inevitably find it and drown in it.
Go figure…
