You can bet the folks around the Columbus/Fort Benning, GA and Phenix City, AL area were breathing a huge sigh of relief after BRAC was released. Like we had any doubt that the Infantry Training Center for the US Army was going to be closed? Nope. There was concern that people would be realigned to other posts, but we are actually going to be “getting” approximately 10,000 people (civilian and military).
“It is happening, if you’re not ready, hang on,” [Columbus, GA] Chamber President Mike Gaymon says hang on for 10,000 soldiers, 6,000 spouses and 10,000 school aged children. “You can put it into perspective in numbers, we’re saying this is the perfect storm.”
More people, more traffic, more overcrowding in the schools, more houses to be sold, more apartments to be rented, more jobs needed. It should all balance out.
