BRAC

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission will getting in gear today - the list should be out.

Here is the timeline of events from the above website:

• May 13, 2005, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld will forward the department’s recommendations to the BRAC Commission.
• The commission will then forward its report on the recommendations to the president by Sept. 8, 2005.
• The president will have until Sept. 23, 2005, to accept or reject the recommendations in their entirety.
• If accepted, Congress will have 45 legislative days to reject the recommendations in their entirety or they become binding on the department.

I’m pretty sure Fort Benning, GA is not on this list.

Please be careful of “fake” lists on the net. Michelle Malkin notes this in her posting “BRAC List Leaked - Maybe Not“.

Either way, some states are going to be hurting and some are going to be doing okay.

UPDATED:

The list is out, according to Fox News:

WASHINGTON — The Defense Department on Friday will propose shutting 33 major military installations across the country, FOX News has confirmed, triggering the first round of base closures in a decade and an intense struggle by communities to save their facilities.

The Pentagon’s list is merely a list of recommendations. The list then goes to a nine-member commission that will review it, travel to those installations and discuss the potential closings with community members. The panel is known as the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission.
