Jo’s Favorite Movies
They are in no particular order, except for the 1st one – that one is my ultimate favorite movie.
1. DUNE – the 1984 version by David Lynch. Note: I do not have the 4 hour version on DVD. I do have the 2 hour cut-down version. We also have the 2000 version that was put out on Sci-Fi. Still, even though the 2000 version follows the book more closely, the 1984 version is the one closest and dear to my heart.
2. The Women – the 1939 version. If you have never seen this movie, this is the ultimate chick flick. There are NO, I repeat, NO men in this movie. They are discussed, fought about, and cried over, but never shown. I caught this one on late night AMC when the CSM was in Texas. I have seen the Broadway version that was aired on PBS and loved it too. Girls, trust me on this – if you love old movies, this is one to try. Netflix has it.
3. The Cape – a TV Movie. This one is about NASA, staring Corbin Burnson and Adam Baldwin. It’s campy, it’s not polished, but for a Star Trek fan, it’s an out in the wild blue movie and I liked it. There was a short TV series afterward that fell flat – but hey, they never asked me and it had a huge sci-fi fan following.
4. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil – I like pretty much anything that Kevin Spacey does and this movie was filmed in and is about Savannah, Georgia. If you have never been to Savannah, you are missing out on a treat.
5. Steel Magnolias. Chick Flick. Tears, laughs, pop-corn and something to watch when you wanna feel whole again afterward. Besides, it has Dolly in it!
6. Star Trek: TOS and TNG. If you’re not a trekkie, move on.
7. The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and Scorpion King. I list all three here because they are sequels. Whenever any one of these is one TNT or any station for that matter, the CSM and I always watch. And, yes, we do have them on DVD for those times when you just have to have a librarian in danger fix.
8. Secondhand Lions. When this first start showing trailers on TV, I was interested, but since we don’t do movie theaters anymore, we forgot about it when it came out on DVD. Then over the 2004 Thanksgiving holiday, we were at the CSM’s brothers and watched it there. We laughed so hard we had to stop the movie and rewind several times. I recommend it. It will make you laugh and cry, but it’ not a chick flick by no means.
9. Stargate: If you don’t know, move on. If you do know, I don’t have to say anymore.
10. Serenity – Made from the television series by Joss Whedon, Firefly.
