Hashtags & #Follow’s Are Killing Twitter
Alright, maybe nothing short of the owners giving up and shutting it down, hashtags aren’t going to actually “kill” Twitter, but I’ll be damned if its not killing my experience on it.
If you have spent any time on Twitter you by now have seen words with a hashtag (#) in front of it. This is used by people in Twitter Search to find tweets on that particular topic. I follow in Tweetdeck the #tcot hashtag.
But lately I am seeing more and more tweets with more hashtags than words. Example:
RT @Theblacksphere: Govern Motors – New Genericus Models http://a2a.me/8R2 Now THIS is FUNNY! #TCOT #GOP #teaparty #tlot #hhrs #sgp #TCU #di
As you can see what I’ve colored, there are 8 hashtags. Uh? Why?
I can appreciate you wanting people seeing your tweet, but come on! That just makes me want to block you.
I’ve seen more and more people complaining about this same thing. Its an infection that needs to be stopped, along with another trend that drives me nuts …
#FollowXXXX … another hashtag. It started with #followfriday, which was fine. It looks like this:
#FollowFriday @redbloodedgirl @lecombat @wbaustin @RobMcNealy @CatoInstitute @DanTanner @maggiemae656 @aspiehler @jerell
Its someone telling their group of followers other people who are good to follow. Okay, fine. If I’m following you, then I probably will follow, or check out, your suggestions.
But now there is a #followmonday, #followtuesday, #followwed …. you get the point.
ENOUGH!
Manners people … its all about manners. I don’t need my timeline filled up with all this mess. If you do it once, fine, but more and more people are repeating, or re-tweeting their on #follow tweets over and over.
Just this week I have unfollowed and blocked four people for over excessive use of the hashtag and follows.

Ppl trying to get recognized will go overboard. I never use hashtags. I think they are ridiculous and pointless.

Amen! I only use #militarymon on a regular basis and even then only once or twice each Monday even though I support concept.
And honestly (shh, don’t tell anyone) I try to completely avoid Twitter on Friday because all anyone does is recommend people. I get tired of all those @ signs. Friday really is the worse time to try to find new people to follow. All they’re doing is RT #FollowFriday @@@@ !
