New Laptop and Fighting Malware

Thursday, 22 January 2009, 5:47

On the 11th of this month I finally decided what I wanted for Christmas.  Yes, a little late, but I just couldn’t figure it out.  I bought a new laptop from Dell.  Yes, we have a laptop that was suppose to be shared by both of us in the living room, but the SGM’s work took it over.  He didn’t do it on purpose but it just happened that way.  Plus with his bad back, its harder to sit in the computer chair than on the couch.  So, I ended up in the computer room on the PC and sometimes we were watching the same program on TV!  Now, we can both be in the living room when we have the same entertainment tastes.

Now, for the PC.  I’m fighting malware right and left so I can’t even move small files from it to the laptop for fear of infecting it.  I’ve had Norton beating it back and am on my second removal program.  We’ll see.  I have two  more programs to try.

Thanks Sean and Tre for sending me in the direction for this malware issue.

Update:  Well it looks like I’ve gotten rid of the Trojan.  I still have an issue with a box on start-up, but that is minor compared to the picnic that Vundo was having on my hard-drive!

Here is where Sean sent me to work on the problem: Malwarebytes

Here is where Tre sent me to work on the problem:  Malware Removal Guide   Read the whole guide first before starting.  I had to stop a couple times and go back because I was so hell-bent on getting it fixed I ran ahead of the instructions.  The above program that Sean sent me to is also part of this, so double thank-you again to you two!

I had the same problem…kept catching myself running ahead. If you think you have any more problems, post your logs on the message board and an expert will review and tell you where to go next. I did that and they found a file that was corrupted – showed me how to get rid of it and download a clean copy. Just great.

I kept Malwarebytes on my laptop along with Spybot so I could make sure this doesn’t happen again!
