Are You Getting a Raise?

Tuesday, 30 December 2008, 6:23

I’m not.  Our company has put on hold raises until we see how things are going middle of next year.  I figured it wasn’t going to happen, wasn’t looking for one, and am not complaining about not getting one.  Yes, I’m one of those people who is very happy

a) she has a job and
b) she has a job she loves to go to each day.

Well guess what?  Congress thinks it deserves a raise even in these economically dismal times

Yup – the Congress of the United States believes that without asking for, or proving they did anything to deserve it, is going to automatically get a raise.

Now isn’t that special?

How many times have you gone to your boss and said, “I want a raise, put it in my check,” and he’s done it?

Despite the country’s economic meltdown, Congress is about to receive an automatic $4,700 pay raise on Thursday — a 2.8 percent increase over the current $169,300 salary for most members.

Rep. Jim Matheson [Utah] says that is unconscionable, and he’s vowing to renew his annual fight to stop such automatic raises. He says the bad economy might just help him win this year, and a government watchdog group is joining his battle to say the raise is a bad idea in such times.

“In a situation where there aren’t many people in this country who are seeing their salaries go up, and in fact a lot of people are losing their jobs, the notion that Congress should be having an automatic pay raise without even a vote just doesn’t pass the smell test,” Matheson said earlier this month.

Contact your senator and representative and tell them NO to automatic raises.

They didn’t ask us for one, and frankly they don’t deserve it either.

I’ve been very fortunate at my company. I’ve had at least three raises in the past 2 and a half years I’ve been here. And just this past CHristmas we got TWO bonuses AND lots of give-aways at the Christmas party. I don’t expect any of this next year though.
