Killing Ourselves

Monday, 22 December 2008, 6:38

Saturday the SGM(r) and I had our eyes checked.  It had been two years for me, several for him.  I know, tsk tsk mama finger wave, but the expense of my glasses puts me off.  However, now that I’m driving at night going to the gym, it was time.

The appointment went well, but I was the lucky one with the eye dialation, so by the time we were done, I just wanted to eat and go home.  Across the street is a Ryan’s and we hadn’t been there in a long time, so off we went.  I had to wear my sunglasses inside, so I felt like a rock star

I started out with a salad, then the main course salad bar, and then a taste of desert (nanner pudding!!).  I was conservative because I’m a diabetic and even though I was in the gym earlier, I was still careful about my choices and portions.

But what this whole post is getting to was the sight seated to our left.  I forgot how obese people can get and I actually felt my heart ache when looking at the size of the four adults and internally wept for the two small children.   I’m not kidding when I say the adults’ legs were the size of a small child themselves!  I watched them plod to the food bars and back.   Again and again and again.  I told the SGM(r) it was so sad.  He reminded me that its a free country and we have the right to eat ourselves to death – and reminded me that some people are genetically predisposed to obesity.  (I don’t know about all that last part).

I know I was looking at four diabetics.   There was no way these four people weren’t either full-blown or pre.  The one ladies hands were so delicate and manicured it was sad these hands were attached to limbs the size they were.

The adults are too far gone for help.  But the children – what are they learning being around that influence?  In some ways it made sense why the liberals want to regulate certain food items – still doesn’t mean I agree with it.  We have the freedom in this country to eat ourselves to death if we want.

It still made my heart ache.  Oh, they weren’t the only ones in there a bit larger than they could be, but these four were the largest.

I hope the children get out before its too late.
