Losing 10th Doctor

With a quick flick of my Blackberry wheel through the RSS feeds came a shared item from my buddy Sean that said “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”.

The title of the shared item? “David Tennant Explains Why He’s Crushing Your Doctor Who Dreams“. I’ve heard grumbling from the entertainment world in Europe, and always knew it would happen.

But … (sigh) …

I didn’t grow up watching Doctor Who.  Either wasn’t on in my area, or wasn’t something that caught my eye when I stumbled on it.  Did I know who “The Doctor” was?  Actually – no.   I’m a Trekkie and love various other type scifi shows, but just never saw or was grabbed onto by Doctor Who.

I fell into this version of Doctor Who via “Torchwood”, an off-shoot of the show.  Immediately falling in love with it, the SGM and I rented all the DVDs from Netflix, and have since purchased Seasons 1-3.  At the end of Season 1, we lost the ninth doctor to the tenth.  Now we are going to be going from 10 to 11.

David Tenant gave The Doctor depth and character that Christopher Eccleston didn’t take the opportunity to do, or didn’t have the chance to do.   Eccleston’s doctor was angry, Tennant’s doctor was moving away from anger into brooding and thoughtful.  He grew, thanks to his wonderful companions.

Tennant explains in this video about when the doctor changed being the most exciting when he watched the show growing up – so I’m going to take my cue from him and not be sad, but look forward to what Moffet and the 11th Doctor can come up with.

Tennant stepped into the Tardis in 2005, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year.
He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards.

“When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won’t be with me,” he said.

“Now don’t make me cry,” he added. “I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don’t take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you’ll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair.”

Good Luck David …

It is your fault I love the Doctor now as well. It was your posting that prompted me to take a look at the show, and, you are right, it is “Fantastic”. Netflix is feeding my new addiction as well, and I am currently working through season 2. I will hate it when I catch up to real time, as I will have to wait for each episode.
