   A person with diabetes in New Mexico has the same illness as someone with diabetes in New York, but they’re likely to get very different treatment.

   Diabetes is known to raise the risk of a number of major health problems, including heart disease and kidney failure. More recently, studies have also linked diabetes to speedier mental decline and dementia in older adults.

   New government estimates show that nearly 24 million people in the United States have diabetes, an increase of more than 3 million in two years.
