World’s Largest Sand Traps
BY MICK WALSH
The cry of “fore” can be heard all over Forward Operating Base Hammer now that the Iraq home of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team has its very own driving range.
“I hope this range and equipment gives you guys at least a few moments of relaxation,” Army Maj. Mark Andres told about two dozen soldiers who braved the elements to become the first to tee off on what could be regarded as the world’s largest sand traps.
It was Andres, an aide to the deputy commanding general of Multi-National Corps-Iraq, who is responsible for bringing golf to FOB Hammer.
Andres used his contacts in Chicago to secure clubs and golf balls for the range. He explained to the first wave of ball strikers, some of whom actually looked quite proficient with a driver, that members of the Professional Golfers of America donated much of the gear to make the driving range a reality.

That’s a great story. Americans always step up to help, we just need to be told how we can help. That is a criticism I have had during this war, while the President encourages us to help by sending packages and volunteering our time to help soldiers and their families, we have been asked very little of as far as no sacrifices. It’s good to read this kind of story.
