Type 2 diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in the developed world. Determining if and how certain genes predispose individuals to type 2 diabetes is likely to lead to the development of new treatment strategies for individuals with the disease.

In a study appearing in the August issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation Valeriya Lyssenko and colleagues from Lund University in Sweden show that certain variants of the gene TCF7L2 make individuals more susceptible to type 2 diabetes.

Rocketing levels of diabetes threaten to cripple Mexico’s already strained health services, as Mexicans spurn exercise and healthy eating in favor of heavy foods and sugary soft drinks, the government said on Thursday.

Health Secretary Jose Cordova warned expensive treatment for diabetes, Mexico’s No. 1 cause of death in recent years, would bankrupt the country’s health system within the next decade if illness levels were not controlled.

Nearly 6.5 million Mexicans are diabetic, a figure that is expected to grow to 11 million by 2025.

Insulin resistance is one of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes and ultimately type 2 diabetes.

But what is insulin resistance? How do you know you have it? Well, that’s the hard part. Insulin resistance very often doesn’t have any symptoms. It’s possible to be insulin resistant and not know it.

Note: Last week I deleted a comment/trackback from a website that totes “Cure Diabetes” and when you get there it also claims to cure cancer, hair loss, ingrown toenails, etc. You get the point. I don’t recommend going to these sites or buying their products – its a waste of money and a sham to play on your emotions.
