Average blood glucose instead of HbA1c?
Chicago, IL – A small but clinically relevant change appears to be coming to the management of patients with diabetes mellitus. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, used to assess long-term glycemic control, might soon be replaced with average blood glucose, a change experts say will add clarity for diabetic patients looking to manage their disease.

Discussing the expected change here at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 2007 Scientific Sessions last week, Dr David Nathan (Harvard University Medical School, Boston, MA) said that “patients have a glucose problem, not a hemoglobin problem” and that fasting glucose would be a better measure, as this new value “would help them understand their disease better.”

More magnesium-rich food for less diabetes
Eating more magnesium-rich foods, like green leafy vegetables and nuts, may reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes, suggests a meta-analysis of observational studies.
The analysis of prospective cohort studies, by researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institutet, reports that for every 100 milligram increase in magnesium intake, the risk of developing type-2 diabetes decreased by 15 per cent.

Diabulimia… The Eating Disorder that Strikes Diabetic Teens
Diabulemia is a new phrase for a phenomenon that is not very well-known. It is another form of bulimia, an eating disorder that typically strikes teens and young adults who are type 1 diabetics.  [...]

The disorder occurs when teens with type 1 start to withhold their insulin doses in order to lose weight. Girls, typically, who are obsessively concerned about body image and being thin, may adopt this disordered pattern of skipping their insulin doses to just taking the bare minimum dose to survive.
