NYC = Nanny City
So We The People are not smart enough to figure out what is bad for us, so of course, in the best liberal sense, the government has to step in and dictate our free will.
The Board of Health voted Tuesday to make New York the nation’s first city to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants – from the corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.
The board, which passed the ban unanimously, did give restaurants a slight break by relaxing what had been considered a tight deadline for compliance. Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008.
Of course anyone with two brains cells left to rub together know that man-manufactured trans fatty acids are not good for us:
Trans fatty acids (commonly termed trans fats) are a type of unsaturated fat (and may be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated).
Trans fats occur naturally, in small quantities, in meat and dairy products from ruminants. Most trans fats consumed today, however, are industrially created as a side effect of partial hydrogenation of plant oils — a process developed in the early 1900s and first commercialized as Crisco in 1911. Partial hydrogenation changes a fat’s molecular structure (raising its melting point and reducing rancidity) but this process also results in a proportion of the changed fat becoming trans fat.
Unlike other fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health. Eating trans fat increases the risk of coronary heart disease. For these reasons, health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally.
I don’t have a problem with pushing people to stop the usage of Trans Fats – they flat our are bad for you; but let’s not start letting the government further dictate our freedoms; our free will.
Good thing I have no use for New York City, or New York state for that matter, and will never have to worry about eating there.
Of course if we all ate like a diabetic did we wouldn’t leave openings for liberals to pass Nanny State Laws that control us “hapless dolts”.
First Trans Fats …. then what?

Yeah – what’s next? I’m afraid to find out. A bit off topic, but isn’t Mayor Bloomberg a dud?
