Holiday Gluttony Disaster For Undiagnosed Diabetics

by Jo | November 25th, 2006

This is the time of the year that we as Americans put away the most food.  Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, then add New Years ta boot, food in all its glory is everywhere.  Work, home, restaurants - even stores put out candy for shoppers.

Diabetics know how to deal - all in moderation and keep moving.  But there are many in this country undiagnosed and unware, but pack in the food and snooze on the couch during football games.

Danger Will Robinson!

Hearty feasts and couch-potato marathons are holiday traditions, but UT Southwestern Medical Center experts warn that packing on pounds and not exercising could be deadly for the 6 million Americans who have diabetes and don’t even know it.

Diabetes, a metabolic disorder linked with obesity, can be a silent killer because its symptoms aren’t sudden, but build up over time and lead to heart disease or other maladies.

That’s bad news for those with undiagnosed diabetes.  Source

Since I’m a Type II Diabetic, this post is geared in that direction.  From the MSN Health area, below are some of the symptoms of Type II Diabetes:

If you do have symptoms of type 2 diabetes, they may include:

  • Feeling thirsty.
  • Having to urinate more than usual.
  • Feeling more hungry than usual.
  • Losing weight without trying to.
  • Feeling very tired.
  • Feeling cranky.

Other signs of type 2 diabetes may include:

  • Lots of infections and cuts and bruises that heal slowly.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet.
  • Lots of skin, gum, or bladder infections.
  • Vaginal yeast infections.

What is so amazing is that I had *all* the above symptoms before being diagnosed.  If I’d only known.  But since it is not a condition in my family, I didn’t think about it.  Granted I liked being a Size 6 (what women wouldn’t), it was an unhealthy Size 6.

So as we go forward from the Thanksgiving feast toward Christmas, let us stop and think before we eat that fudge, the 12th piece, or the whole pumpkin pie.

Are you killing yourself?
