American Diabetes Association Launches New National Initiative ‘I Decide to Fight Diabetes’ as Part of American Diabetes Month

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov 01, 2006 – The American Diabetes Association (ADA) announced today its newest initiative, I Decide to Fight Diabetes, as part of American Diabetes Month that officially begins today.

The I Decide to Fight Diabetes campaign is a new opportunity to support the mission of ADA - to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The signature item of the I Decide to Fight Diabetes campaign will be a new “I Decide” charm that can be worn on a keychain, necklace or bracelet.

Diabetes is America’s number one health threat in our country today. Did you know:
* Nearly 21 millions adults and children have diabetes
* One-third of them (6.2 million) don’t know they have the disease
* 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime if nothing is done to stem the tide.

The ADA announced that the “I Decide” charm can be purchased by visiting I Decide or by calling 1.877.ADA.ID26.

In addition, the I Decide to Fight Diabetes campaign encourages people to become champions in the cause against diabetes and demonstrate their commitment to actively promoting healthier lifestyle behaviors that will help them manage and control type 1 diabetes, and prevent and control type 2 diabetes in themselves and their loved ones. I Decide to Fight Diabetes empowers them to stand together in the fight against diabetes, become a champion in the fight and display to the world their commitment to win the fight.
