Now on the candy aisle: portion control
CHICAGO (Reuters) – The latest big idea in the candy aisle is smaller servings.  Portion control, which has been working its way through the grocery store in the form of 100-calorie bags of cookies and smaller food packs is now coming to one of the few remaining bastions of indulgence: the candy aisle. Two of the world’s largest chocolate companies, Hershey Co. and Nestle, were promoting new stick versions of their popular chocolate bars on Tuesday at the All Candy Expo, a major candy trade show in Chicago. Also on the show floor were 100-calorie packages of Sunkist fruit chews from Simply Lite Foods Corp. and other low calorie and sugar-free candies.

Hospitals prepare for growing ranks of obese
CHICAGO (Reuters) – As Americans keep getting bigger, hospitals are revamping themselves to accommodate an influx of obese patients. When these patients check into a hospital, they are increasingly likely to find themselves in a room with a wider doorway than the 42-inch standard, a bed that holds up to 1,000 pounds and a ceiling lift system to move them to the bathroom. Toilets in such a room are extra-sturdy and mounted to the floor instead of a wall. The number of obesity, or bariatric, surgeries performed each year has quadrupled since 2000, according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. The procedures generally involve surgically shrinking the stomach and bypassing the intestines to cause the patient to absorb less food. The obese — often defined as weighing 20 percent or more than medically recommended levels — are also more likely to suffer from chronic medical ailments like diabetes and severe joint problems, bringing them into the hospital.

Antidepressants Can Increase Diabetes Risk in Certain Cases
If you are already at high risk for getting type 2 diabetes, antidepressant drugs can boost that risk, according to new research reported Saturday. The report was based on a re-analysis of part of the Diabetes Prevention Program, a large-scale study in which researchers reported in 2002 that those at high risk for getting type 2 diabetes who lost excess weight and exercised were able to prevent the onset of diabetes much of the time.
