It’s Spreading….

Tuesday, 16 May 2006, 9:59

The blogosphere is up in arms. Bush didn’t say what THEY wanted to hear, therefore it’s OVER! We’re electing all democrats in 2006…boy, that’ll show ‘em! Then I’ll go hide in my room with my teddy bear and not speak to you anymore…so there!

What is happening? Someone on RedState has an idea that I agree with:

Sadly, it appears our side has allowed our buttons to be pushed.

Credit the other side. They saw an opportunity and exploited it. I just wish that those who have decided that immigration as an issue is so important at this time would think about the fact that they are reacting exactly as the organizers of those marches hoped.

Usually, acting the way your opponents want you to act is not a wise course of action, unless you are absolutely certain that your opponents have miscalculated. Seeing how the prevailing opinion is that the GOP is in some trouble right now, I suspect there was no such miscalculation this time.

I want tough action against illegal immigration. I won’t lay out my thoughts here, but in general I think we need serious crackdowns on it, and have needed it since *at least* September 12, 2001. I also know that conservatives/republicans need to find ways to work together. I don’t mean that we should stand behind Bush no matter what (as supporters of Clinton did) but we should be reasonable, willing to talk and willing to compromise.

We should set the example and the standard. Instead, some bloggers have joined the ranks of the moonbat left — not with lefty positions, but in how they handle themselves. Leftwing lunacy hasn’t gotten them anywhere but the bottom of the barrel. Do we really want to join them there?

As someone wise once said, “Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

UPDATE (by Trelaina):  The Anchoress has an excellent post on this subject, and she makes the point far better than I do.

These idiots that want to put democrats in the Whitehouse to “show the GOP” are in for a rude awakening — I personally don’t want my taxes raised, the war in Iraq to finish before it “is” done, and I don’t want two years of impeachment hearings going on, and lastely — I don’t want Hillary Clinton in the Whitehouse in ’08. If you think our country stinks now .. just you wait. Vote libs in as a way to “show” ‘em … then shut your mouths when the country goes down the drain.

All those millions upon millions of legal and illegal immigrants that the current GOP leadership supports bringing here will certainly have an impact on your taxes.

Here’s an idea: send a message in 2006 and hope that the GOP reforms before 2008.

Have to agree with both Jo and Trelaina here. Overreaction is in many ways as big a threat as no reaction at all, and playing into the other side’s hand isn’t the correct response to a problem. Electing Democrats simply because the Republicans can’t get their heads together on immigration is downright puerile, particularly considering that a Democratic administration could, and likely would, make the problems infinitely worse. Don’t think for a minute the Democrats would turn away from amnesty – they’d likely botch the job even worse by granting immediate citizenship. No, the answer is to work from within and keep the pressure on until the GOP figures out that its constituency isn’t pleased by its response. The ship turns slowly, but it does turn.

    Just had a thought.

If we DON’T normalize the 11 million Mexicans – and make them pay their taxes like everyone else – then what’s to stop Social Security from breaking down in another ten years? We ARE running out of money, after all – what we need is more citizens to pay into it… God knows nobody in Congress want to TOUCH Social Security reform with a ten-foot pole, so there’s one problem solved.

I’ve heard that one, but unfortunately it’s already been shot down. If we “normalize” them, they’re going to be PAID SS benefits, so the problem isn’t solved (and in fact might get worse).

Social Security needs a lot more to save it than a few more people paying in.
