Rita Hits Land

So I get up at 5:30 am — don’t ask, I know it’s a Saturday, just don’t ask — and flip on Fox News. Rita has come ashore and I’m looking at pictures from Beaumont, Texas and I see lights?!?

Street signs are still up … I see trees NOT laying across the roads. I’m not saying there is not damage now okay — but what my first sites are do not look anything like Katrina’s mess.

We’ll see how things progress throughout the day.

7:32 am
Fox is reporting fires in Galveston …
The lights that I’ve seen on are from those fueled by generators they’re saying …

My Thoughts: The evacuation was better than Katrina, but will be better next time. We’re learning folks … unfortunately, practice makes perfect.

Well, I am up at 6:30am (because we went to bed at 8:30pm last night!) and I’m seeing the same. Looks like it landed even a bit east of the updated guesses from last night. Let’s hope that’s good news for all.

Houston dodged the bullet and we are so very grateful. Our city, county, state, and feds worked together like champs and we were as prepared as humanly possible. The mayor of Galveston did a great job for her community. Unfortunately there were 2 big fires there last night as the storm hit and the firefighters were true heroes. Texas learned many lessons from Katrina, plus Texans are a different breed, you know. I am not a native but still proud to live in Houston.
