Whey Supplement Helpful For Diabetics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – For people with type 2 diabetes, adding whey to high-carbohydrate meals stimulates insulin release and reduces spikes in blood glucose levels after meals, according to new findings.

Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Mikael Nilsson, of Lund University, Sweden, and colleagues say the reason whey proteins have this effect is not known, but it may have something to do with particular amino acids and hormones found in the mild product.

The researchers examined the effect of supplementing high glycemic index (GI) meals — that is, readily digested carbs that cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels — with whey proteins.

A total of 14 individuals with type 2 diabetes were served a high-GI breakfast (white bread) and subsequent high-GI lunch (mashed potatoes with meatballs). Whey supplementation was provided with both meals on one day, and whey was exchanged for lean ham and lactose on another day.

The investigators took blood samples before and during a 4-hour period after breakfast and 3 hours after lunch in order to measure blood glucose, insulin, and other factors.

Diet and Excercise in Gestational Diabetes

You should make sure that you are providing you and your baby with an adequate nutrition and enough calories for the appropriate weight gain during your pregnancy, for maintaining normal blood glucose levels, and for helping you avoid ketosis (the presence of ketones in your urine).

Usually, it is recommended that you get an additional 300-500 calories per day in the second and third trimester if you have a normal weight. However, it is suggested that you consult your doctor before changing your calorie consumption.

The role of exercise in women with gestational diabetes has been controversial, because while it can help decrease glucose levels, it has en effect on uterine activity. The stationary recumbent bicycle (a bike with the pedals in front of you instead of below you) seems to be the best option.

However, exercise has its benefits on glycemic control. Researchers report that women with gestational diabetes who follow diet and exercise have lower glycated hemoglobin levels and glucose levels compared to women who just follow the diet.

US bill may allow diabetic truckers

WASHINGTON, (Aug. 2, 2005) — Transportation legislation passed last week in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate contains an important provision that will end discrimination against people with diabetes who seek employment as commercial drivers in the U.S.
The American Diabetes Association led a coalition to enable qualified individuals who must use insulin to properly manage their diabetes to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce.

Language in the “Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: a Legacy for Users (SAFETEA- LU)” eliminates a provision in the FMCSA’s 2003 Diabetes Exemption Program that made it almost impossible for anyone with insulin-treated diabetes to even apply to drive commercially and replaces it with a medically sound system for individual assessment. As a result, qualified people with insulin-treated diabetes will be able to drive commercial motor vehicles.

Check for pet diabetes

ANYONE who thinks that diabetes is an illness limited to humans should think again animals live with it too.

Diabetes is a growing problem among the pet population of the UK, with as many as one in 200 of the country’s dogs and cats suffering from the disease.

As in their human counterparts, it is associated with old age and being overweight.

Chingford Veterinary Centre is running free checks for cats and dogs. Animals will be weighed and checked by the nurse and owners will be given a free diabetes screening test to use on their pets.

Caryn Gibbins, a vet at the surgery, said: “Animals whose diabetes goes untreated will usually develop cataracts or blindness and may be prone to infections, high blood pressure and strokes. They may start to have seizures, go into a coma and die.”

Once diagnosed, most pets can have their diabetes successfully managed with dietary changes and medication.
